A New Addition!!

Hello everyone!!  
As you probably know, I am now on Maternity Leave to stay at home with my son, Lincoln Jase!  He's wonderful, and I am having a great time at home with him (even though I'm exhausted!)  :)
¡Hola a todos!

¡Como usted probablemente sabe, ahora estoy de permiso de maternidad para quedarse en casa con mi hijo, Lincoln Jase!  Él es maravilloso, y estoy pasando muy bien en casa con él (aunque estoy agotado!) :)


The 4th graders are in wonderful hands with my long-term substitute, Lindsey Strange!  She is a familiar face at Cannon, and has worked in many grade levels.  She and the scholars will be working on some exciting projects for these last two months of school.  In Social Studies, they'll be experiencing the Texas Revolution, Texas during the Civil War and a research project on an important person or innovation that has come out of Texas.  In Science, they will be working with Electromagnets and completing an extensive engineering project in which they will design a technology based on adaptations found in plants or animals! 
¡Los alumnos de 4to grado están en manos maravillosas con mi sustituto a largo plazo, Lindsey Strange!  Ella es una persona bien conocida en Cannon, y ha trabajado en muchos grados.  Ella y los alumnos estarán trabajando en algunos proyectos interesantes para estos dos últimos meses de la escuela.  En estudios sociales, van a estar experimentando la Revolución de Texas, Texas durante la Guerra Civil y un proyecto de investigación sobre una persona o innovación importante que ha salido de Texas.  En ciencias, ¡se van a trabajar con electroimanes y completar un proyecto de ingeniería extensa en la que se diseñará una tecnología basada en las adaptaciones se encuentran en plantas o animales!

I miss the scholars, and am so excited to see them next year!  I'll be visiting them in May and bringing the baby-the scholars made me promise I would :)
¡Echo de menos los alumnos, y estoy muy emocionada de verlos el año que viene!  Voy a visitarlos en mayo, y llevar a mi bebé-los alumnos me hizo prometer que lo haría :)

I hope the rest of the school year is wonderful for everyone!  See you again in August!

Wonderful Open House!!

Thanks to everyone who came to our Choir Concert and Open House last night!!  I, personally, love seeing the scholars be excited about showing off what they have learned to their families.  Thank you so much again for coming!  If you didn't have the opportunity to come, look at the pictures below to see our scholars and their families in action!

Open House!

Please join us for Open House tomorrow night from 5:30-7:00!  The amazing Cannon Choirs will be performing their Pop Concert from 5:30-6:00, and then you'll be able to come and see all the exciting things your child has been doing this year!  My classroom will be set up as a mini interactive museum, and your child will be your guide!  Come see what they've learned and what YOU can learn, too!

Electrical Engineering

In addition to studying the Water Cycle and Weather in Science, our 4th grade scholars have also been working on an exciting Engineering project!
During the past few weeks, our scholars have learned about electrical engineering!  They read a story about a girl in Australia who put her knowledge of electrical circuits to good use on her farm to help her complete her chores.
Además de estudiar el ciclo del agua y el estado del tiempo en ciencias, ¡nuestros alumnos de 4to grado también han estado trabajando en un proyecto de ingeniería!
Durante las últimas semanas, ¡nuestros alumnos han aprendido acerca de la ingeniería eléctrica!  Ellos leen la historia de una niña en Australia que puso a su conocimiento de los circuitos eléctricos en buen uso en su granja para ayudarle a completar sus tareas.

After we read the story, we learned that electricity is just one type of energy that we use, and it can be transformed into many different types of energy.  Then, we investigated how electricity flows through circuits by trying to make a light bulb illuminate just using a battery and a wire.
Después de leer la historia, nos enteramos de que la electricidad es sólo un tipo de energía que usamos, y puede transformarse en diferentes tipos de energía.  Entonces, investigamos cómo la electricidad fluye a través de los circuitos tratando de hacer una bombilla de luz iluminan sólo con una batería y un cable.


Our final task was to create an "alarm system" that would send a signal light when a fulcrum was dropped.  The students had to use the Engineering Design Process in order to create their functioning circuit.
Nuestra meta final fue la creación de un "sistema de alarma" que enviaría una señal luminosa cuando un punto de apoyo fue abandonado.  Los estudiantes tenían que usar el proceso de diseño de ingeniería para crear su circuito.

After designing the circuit, they had to deliver their plan to a "contractor" who would have to use their plan to build the circuit!

After discussing the positives and negatives of each team's design, the scholars had a chance to improve and rebuild their designs if necessary.  It was very exciting to see all of the creative ways the scholars had to make their circuit system!
Después de discutir las ventajas y desventajas del diseño de cada equipo, los expertos tuvieron la oportunidad de mejorar y reconstruir sus diseños si fue necesario.  ¡Fue muy emocionante ver a todas las formas creativas de los alumnos tuvieron que hacer su sistema de circuito!
